We just got in a big shipment from Briggs and Little. Lots of colours of Heritage and Country Roving. Both are rustic 100% wool and it is CANADIAN wool. The Heritage is a worsted weight and the roving is a super chunky weight, great for mittens and Cowichan style sweaters respectively. You can use the two yarns together to make thrummed mittens or the Heritage to make great fair isle mittens. Wool is a great insulator and it naturally repels water making it great for mittens. Briggs and Little Heritage is an example of a woolen spun yarn which means the hairs of the fibre are not all aligned. Woolen yarns contains lots of air, they’re light, fluffy, and will often have small ends of fibre poking out of the yarn structure. They’re incredibly elastic and bouncey. But it also means that they are more of that scratchy wool feel that many people associate with wool. For things like mittens or sweaters which are not in direct contact with your more sensitive skin, they are great for providing warmth. Although at this time of year we are not thinking about how to stay warm, the person you make the item for will thank you when the cold weather comes.
